One of the primary objectives of the ISM CODE is to establish safeguards against all identified risk (ISM CODE, Section 1.2.2.2). this is achieved in a number of ways, all of which constitute a form of Risk Management.

In a hazardous work environment, management of operational risk is an absolute necessity for preventing accidents and incidents.

An accurate risk assessment serves as a dependable decision support system by which SMS personnel can handle potentially dangerous situations with greater safety.

A formal risk management approach is the demand of the shipping industry for safe guarding human life, the marine environment, the vessel and its cargo.

 

Taking into account the importance of the subject, PNSC ISM CODE CELL/Training Section conducted the 29th Risk Assessment and Management Course.

This course was specifically designed and tailored to meet the requirements of the shore based SMS personnel.

 

The course objectives were to apprise participants of:

  1. Concept of informal risk assessment.

  2. Conducting hazards identification.

  3. Using risk matrix methodology to determine risk rating.

  4. Application of controls to reduce risks ALARP.

  5. Familiarization with Company’s specific Risk Assessment and Management processes.

The course presented best practices of ensuring safety onboard and apprised the participants how to establish a risk profile of various critical operation conducted onboard.

The course was well received by the participants.
